May Runfessions

Memorial Day weekend is here and POOF! So is summer weather! It is in the upper 80s here in Chitown and will likely hit the 90s over the weekend. Okay then! Might as well jump right in to the Runfessional, as well! I’m linking up with Marcia from Marcia’s Healthy Slice for another Runfessions session! C’mon in and let’s see what I’ve been up to!

I have to runfess, not much! I haven’t done any business travel thus far this month, and I have to admit, except for the fact that no travel means no income (I own the business), it was a welcomed break. I don’t mind the travel itself too much (depending on where I’m going), but my early spring was unusually busy for me, and I needed this little hiatus from all the craziness.

That being said, I will be heading to one of my favorite cities (Las Vegas) to teach a program next week. I’m super excited (because, Vegas) but also because my college BFF, whom I haven’t seen in years (despite the fact that she lives no more than a half hour away), is joining me for a few days. Between working and catching up with her, I’m sure the trip will be exhausting, but I am very much looking forward to reconnecting.

I have to runfess, in a chicken-and-the egg scenario, I’ve gained almost 15 pounds in the past four or five months, and I feel like crap. I have also barely, and I mean BARELY run in the past few months. So do I feel like crap because I’ve gained weight and am not running, or does the fact that I haven’t been running mean I feel like crap and have gained weight. I think we all know the answer to that.

That would be me

runfess, I have Grandma’s Marathon in three, yes THREE weeks and, um, see my second runfession, above. On the bright (?) side, the course cutoff time is seven hours. Looks like I’ll be taking a casual stroll through Duluth next month.

I’m bringing sexy (at least presentable) back

I must runfess, I’m a hot mess. Not only have I gained weight, I haven’t had a hair cut since before my son’s wedding in September, and I haven’t had a pedicure since January! I’ll spare you the details on the other body maintenance I’ve been slacking off on. UGH. At least I’ve kept up on the color (at my age, some things are non-negotiable)! So, as of this week I’m hitting the reset button. I’ve revamped my diet, started running again, got my hair colored on Tuesday, cut on Wednesday, and got a pedicure today. I think I feel the pressure of seeing my friend next week to get myself back in shape.  Now if I can only knock 10 pounds off by next Thursday.

Last, I runfess that there’s a lot of stuff going on at work right now and layoffs are once again threatened. I vacillate between praying I don’t get hit and hoping that I do. I’m not sure what I will do if it happens. I’m not really up for looking for another job at this point in my life. Time will tell…

I’m also linking up with Fairytales and Fitness and Running on Happy for the Friday Five.

How has your month been? Do you have anything good to runfess? Have you ever been laid off from a job? What about Vegas? Yay or nay?

  1. Totally understand where you are coming from with the chicken and the egg scenario. While I have continued running after my marathon in March, I’ve also gained wight and I’m not happy about it. I’m going to be joining Weight Watchers on Monday in hopes that it gives me a jump start to lose some weight.

I will say, everyone who does weight watchers (and sticks to the plan) seems to do well. I’m planning (or hoping) to crash off five to 10 pounds with Atkins and then looks to something a little more long-term like Weight Watchers. Good luck!

  2. If you figure out how to knock those 10 lbs off quickly let me know cause I have 10 that just won’t budge! Sigh.

Good luck with the work situation – looming layoffs are always stressful.

Have you ever tried Atikins? It’s my magic, as long as I can stick to it. I can easily lose 10 pounds during the first two week induction if I’m strict. I know it’s not permanent, but it’s the launching pad for me to feel good and keep moving.

  3. I runfess that I really need to figure out a way to lose some weight, as running and eating chocolate isn’t cutting it! Fingers crossed on your job.

  4. I tend to neglect self-care and try to make up for it all at once too. I hope you feel better after you get all your appointments in. 😉

It has seriously made a big difference. I really feel like I was in a funk. It will take time to lose the weight, of course, but at least I have everything else in check.

  5. I can’t imagine you’d be let go after being there so long! You could always come over to the dark side (aka Advocate)!

I finally got a haircut this week and omg–while I’ needed it, she cut off about 3 inches. It’s way shorter that I wanted but oh well..

I would have thought the same thing, but they did it 10 years ago and now no one feels safe. It is what it is. I’ll tell you, at least Advocate is growing, not shrinking (or dying) like us. My stylist knows to cut the bare minimum just to clean things up. Of course she’s been cutting my hair for 25 years, so I just sit in the chair and she does what she does.

  6. I don’t know how you wing it with these marathons! My body would hate me. I loved Grandma’s. Wish I could go back!

Haha, sometimes I wonder! But don’t forget…you train to run; I pseudo-train to finish. Big difference! I am very much looking forward to Grandma’s. I’ve only heard good things.

  7. I totally get the chicken and the egg thing, I feel like I was in that same position a few weeks ago. I feel like I’ve gone over the hump, where I’m now losing weight, and running faster, which is encouraging me to run more.

I feel the same way. I think if I can knock off just five of these pounds I will be encouraged to get more active. Congrats on your progress!

  8. May has been going well. Cannot believe it is almost over. The most exciting thing about it is that is means it is close to the end of the school year.

I’ve never been laid off from a job.

Yes to Vegas! Would love to go back there again.

I’m so excited for this trip. It will be 100+ degrees there so we are planning on work-pool-casino-eat and repeat the entire time!

  9. Vegas sounds great, enjoy your time there! I have had a super crazy month and desperately need my hair doctored up…a ll the grays are out 🙂

Thanks! I travel to Vegas about once a year for business (plus once or twice a year for fun), so it will be nice to add a little unexpected fun into the mix this time around!

  10. You’re going to have a blast with your friend in Vegas! I’m sitting here holding my very overgrown hair up off my neck as I read (because summer weather!). Add me to camp neglect as well. Oh wow Grandma’s really crept up!
