Winter in Chicago is not for the faint of heart, but as a lifelong Chicagoan, I’ve gotten pretty used to it. Over the years, I’ve figured out the two most important things that help me stay warm: Keeping my feet dry, and keeping my hands warm. However, trying to stay warm while working up a sweat in the dead of winter is a whole different animal. The trick is to stay warm without getting too sweaty because at that point, the chill goes all the way down to the bone and when that happens, it’s really hard to shake.
When the opportunity to test out these flip-mittens came up, I jumped at the chance. I’ve only been running for about seven years, and for the most part, I’ve relied on my treadmill for winter running. But now that Ole Milly is dead and buried, if I want to keep running year-round, I have no other choice but to take it outside. I’ve tried so many types of gloves and mittens that kept my hands either too warm or too cold. I was hopeful these would be the Goldilocks’ porridge of running gloves I’ve been looking for.
I received the WINTER SOFT Midweight Mittens to try, but there are several other styles and products available on the Turtle Gloves website. The first thing I noticed was that they are incredibly soft. Made from a polyester, nylon, and spandex blend, they are high-wicking, breathable, and have a nice stretch to them. I generally wear a women’s size large in gloves or mittens, but the unisex size small fit me like, well, a glove. I loved the custom-made style in the deep BibRave orange color with the BibRave logo prominently featured on one of the mittens. They are a perfect match to my favorite running shoes!
I received my flip-mittens in early November, and wouldn’t you know it, we were seeing unseasonably warm temperatures in the mid-60s. But as things often go in the midwest, within weeks the temperatures dropped to single-digits. That right there is one of the best features of this product ~ they can be used to keep the hands warm with the fingers exposed in milder weather, but once the cold weather hits, with a simple flip they can be converted into mittens to fully cover the entire hand. I also love the flexibility of having my fingers exposed when walking my girl Blue, so I can keep a better grip on her leash the moment she spots that nearby squirrel.
I’ve been wearing my Turtle Gloves TURTLe-Flip Mittens for more than a month now, and I couldn’t be happier. They are perfect for slightly cold temperatures or for temperatures in the single digits. I haven’t had the opportunity to wear them in the rain or snow, so I can’t speak to how well they would perform in wet conditions. Still, they will be permanent fixture in my winter running arsenal.
And I might have already bought this incredibly cute pair specifically for my walks with Blue. Interested in trying these out for yourself? Save 15% off of your entire purchase (including sale items) using Code “TURTLEBIBRAVE” at checkout!

Nothing. Nada. Zilch.
These flip mittens look great! I often remove my gloves when I get too warm halfway into a run. Then I must carry them, which is a pain. thanks for the recommendation.
They are definitely a great addition to my winter running gear, and I absolutely love the deep orange color!
These are a fantastic product & a must-have for surviving the Midwest winters! The warmth, the softness and the versatility are sweet features 🙂
I just love them. So many fun colors and patterns, too!
I tried these out last year when they were in the design phase. I am glad to see that they went through with them. They look super warm and comfy
They definitely are warm and cozy, and I just love the feature that converts them to expose the fingers when they get too warm…and of course to be able to work my phone to take selfies on my runs!
These look great! Glad they worked out so well. Having a good pair of glove or mittens is so important for running in the winter!
They’ve been a great asset in these early weeks of winter. I’m hoping they will do well as the temps continue to drop!
Those are a great idea and look very handy to have. I think they would work for me as long as the temps didn’t get below 45° or so… My fingers get so cold, I have to double layer and wear mittens over gloves.
I love these gloves! I tested them out last year and couldn’t get over how soft they were!
Everyone makes these gloves sound so cool- if I lived in a place where I could use them more I would totally get a pair! Florida doesn’t see the use of gloves that often though 😉
